The Benefits of In-Home Care v. Kenneling Your Pet

~Kennels can be expensive. Kennels usually charge around $25/night. They also charge for mandatory flea treatments and can charge large amounts for “exercise and play” time. Atlanta Pet Au Pair is a more affordable option. We will provide your pet with exercise, play and loving time free of charge and we will never surprise you with additional fees or requirements.

~Kennels require current vaccinations. Most kennels require that your pet be vaccinated for diseases like rabies and kennel cough before they can be boarded. If your pet is not current you will be charged the veterinarian fees for the vaccinations as well as the boarding fees. Atlanta Pet Au Pair does recommend that you have your pet vaccinated, however, we do not require it.

~Kennels can make your pet sick. The environment of a kennel for a pet is similar to that of a daycare for a child. Germs abound! Your pet may be housed with multiple animals and allowed to play in common areas with other pets. Also, kennels are not the cleanest places to keep your pet. Waste removal may not occur immediately especially during the overnight hours. Also, since many kennels are associated with veterinary offices your pet may be housed with other animals recovering from surgery or disease.

~Kennels can cause anxiety. Kennels usually keep pets in metal cages with concrete floors. The kennel is cold, noisy, and unfamiliar. Your pet will not only suffer the anxiety of being separated from you, but also the stress of staying in an unfamiliar environment. In response, many pets will refuse to eat or drink. This stress can cause your pet to suffer from a weakened immune system making it harder for them to resist the germs and viruses they come in contact with inside the kennel.

~Most kennels will not accept exotic pets. Most kennels are not equipped to handle exotic animals like large parrots, reptiles, and primates. These animals may also be more likely to become stressed in an unusual environment because they are wild and have not been domesticated. Atlanta Pet Au Pair sitters have experience with almost all exotic pets. Let us keep your exotic pet safe and happy while you are away.
